Rare by design. Legendary by reputation.
Overdrive Special amplifiers are some of the most expressive guitar amps ever created, handcrafted in very limited quantities and often voiced for individual players. Produced in the low hundreds, these amps are among the most sought-after boutique amps in history because of their rarity and sound. The two amps featured in the Double Special Collection represent the highly desirable eras of this legendary circuit design, giving players access to tones inspired by some of the most revered amplifiers ever made.
IK’s 1978 Overdrive Special Export Combo
Serial #0038
Serial #0038 belongs to the late-1970s export period, a key phase in the development of the iconic circuit. Amps from this time are often described as more immediate and organic, with an open top end, blooming midrange, and a raw, touch-sensitive response that feels highly connected to the player.
Built around a 50-watt 6L6 power section and cascading clean-to-overdrive architecture, these early circuits produce piano-like cleans and smooth, vocal lead tones with natural compression.
IK’s 1980 Overdrive Special Combo
Serial #0080 (“The Don”)
Serial #0080 marks a later stage in this iconic circuit's evolution. Compared to earlier versions, this period is often seen as more focused and refined, with tighter low end, quicker transient response, and better note separation at higher gain. While retaining the cascading clean-to-overdrive design that defines it, these later circuits offer greater clarity, articulation, and control at higher gain settings.
Built around a 50-watt 6L6 platform, it excels at punchy rhythm tones, articulate edge-of-breakup textures, and saturated lead sustain that remains clear and defined in a mix.
Inside the Capture
Both amplifiers were captured across a comprehensive range of carefully dialed sweet spots, including Clean and Overdrive channels, Rock and alternate voicings, Bright and Deep switches, Accent shaping, and varied EQ and gain levels.
Boosted Complex Rigs
The collection also includes complex rigs created with classic front-end boosts based on a Gold Klon Centaur, JHS Morning Glory, and an Ibanez TS10. These period-correct setups recreate the stacked tones commonly used with Overdrive Special amps for added saturation, sustain, and midrange focus.
