Review by Steve Smith Sound -
I’ve used this set up 4 times now for small to mid sized venues . ( under 500 people )Rating
About me : I’m a very small sound company in St. Louis specializing in Club , Band and Festival sound reinforcement. I always have to work on somewhat of a tight budget. I have to make every buck count. I’m writing this to maybe help other small sound companies or musicians working on tight budgets.
For me and my budget this was a sizable investment for a small system . So I took the risk since there are almost no reviews on this equipment.
My goal was to find a high quality light weight portable system that was easy for one person to set up. The system would be used in a ground stack configuration not flown. Easy in - easy out. Preferably fit in a small van to save gas on the big box truck.
EQUIPMENT - 4 - VRX928la tops 4 - VRX915s Subs 2- JBL bk-4 poles
4 - QSC plx 3402 amps ( 2 for tops Bi-amped and 2 for subs.) DBX drive rack , DBX 266 compressor Ashly E.Q. Allen & Heath or Midas mixing Board. Yes it all fit in my Astro van ( yea )
Note ; I have also run QSC plx 1804s on tops.
END RESULT - Full crystal clear sound that fills entire room evenly , tons of punch . Pretty much everything I was hoping for. The top are robust and bottoms are very solid.
Average room size 80 X 125 ft. 105 spl
Each venue so far has required softer volumes of play back pre-show. You hear every tap of the ride cymbal from the front all the way back at the rear at a very low volume.
NOTES; out of the box I ran tops in passive mode ,way too much horn , tons of e.qing required did not care for the overall sound. But in bi-amp mode with drive rack set to JBL spec,s they will rock you .
I decided on the 928 instead of the 923 mostly because of the weight 2 of the 932’s on a pole is over 80 lbs.
My system design was to be kept small , light weight indoor work. I wasn’t looking for something to replace my typical outdoor setup of 4 to 6 sr4733 tops and 8- 4719 subs. I will be using this system this weekend outdoors for the first time under a tent in a smaller VIP section preempting the main stage act with my larger system. I have all the confidence in the world they will sound fantastic. Last note the JBL case covers for all of these are a must they protect very well ,after all if I would have loaded them in a road case I would have needed help unloading and my big truck to transport. Thanks Steve
