Designed with the sophisticated project studio owner or smaller commercial facility in mind, Saffire PRO 40 features a versatile 20 inputs and 20 outputs, including a complement of eight Focusrite mic preamps guaranteed to get the best out of any microphone, with minimal noise and distortion even at high gain. Two mic/line/instrument inputs are accessed via the front panel, which also provides two independent headphone monitor outputs.

30-year heritage of acclaimed mic pre design

Focusrite’s unparalleled preamp legacy forms the foundation of this versatile interface, with eight award-winning Focusrite preamps. Focusrite came into being thirty years ago in 1985 when console design legend Rupert Neve was asked by Sir George Martin to develop new mic pres for the consoles at AIR studios. The resulting, sought-after sound has been the basis of Focusrite mic preamps ever since. Those used in our computer interface ranges are a special 2-stage design created specially for the purpose, combining low noise, high gain and exceptional headroom, allowing you to get the best out of any microphone.

Precision conversion in and out

Our acclaimed mic pres are combined with the very latest in interfacing technology, including precision digital conversion based on exceptional circuit design and multi-layer boards, offering the lowest possible latency. JetPLL™ jitter-reduction technology helps to attain the goal of pristine audio quality, coupled with excellent routing flexibility and future-proof, rock-solid stability. Meanwhile, powerful Saffire MixControl DSP-based zero-latency mixing software allows the maximum monitoring flexibility.

A host of I/O options

All eight main inputs feature combo XLR/TRS connectors and sense which is in use automatically. Inputs 1 and 2 appear on the front panel and support mic, line and instrument operation, while the remaining six are on the rear panel and offer mic and line input functionality. In addition to the comprehensive monitoring options described below, there are eight TRS line outputs. In addition, ADAT I/O, stereo S/PDIF I/O and two virtual ‘loopback’ inputs for routing digital audio between software applications are provided. Every mic pre features phantom power, with the first two channels also featuring -9dB pads for additional headroom. Front panel five-step LED metering for each analogue input offers accurate viewing of levels.

MixControl: zero-latency DSP-powered mixing software

Saffire MixControl, the ultra-low-latency 18 x 16 DSP Mixer/Router software provided with Saffire PRO 40, sets a new standard at this price point for audio interface control. It features unparalleled output routing and monitoring, as well as intuitive one-click options, a clear and concise mixing layout and large on-screen metering for inputs, outputs and submixes.

Maximum monitoring

Two independent headphone buses are provided, each with their own level controls available on the front panel. A dedicated stereo monitor mix TRS output features pads for improved sound quality when connected to active monitor speakers, while an 'anti-thump' circuit protects your monitor speakers from spikes when booting up or shutting down. Front panel controls include a main monitor dial with dim and mute switches, all of which fully integrate with customisable software to cover every possible monitoring need, providing a set of controls for any set-up from basic stereo to full 7.1 surround.

Awesome Interface!

We had started our recording process with the M- Audio MBox Mini and after a few months we decided that we had to take a step up and after tons of reseach we came across this... Man, this thing is awesome! We took more than just a step! Our Microphones sounded better, our piano stereo tracks were way better, and not to mention enough tracks to record drums! which we did... I got this recording interface back a little before Christmas and wanted to really use it before I wrote a review on it. Well I've used it a lot since then and I'm in love with it! The preamps are nice and quiet, the amount of input output is awesome and the mixing software that comes with in rocks! And it's build like a tank!
I'm always impressed by this interface and what it can do. From zero latency routing to things as simple as making my normal relaxing music's quality sound better, it does everything and more that I had hoped for and I can always count on it to get the job done.
If you're looking at getting a piece of gear that will carry you a long away in home/professional recording then look no further, this is your man! And the guys here at Proaudiostar will defiantly hook you up with a good deal. I know they'll always be my first choice! (Posted on 5/16/13)
Great interface!

The Saffire Pro 40 is my first serious toe-dip into the vast recording ocean and I have been very impressed thus far. Previously, I was recording through a mixer into my computer's sound card and the background noise alone made any recordings practically unusable. Not an issue with the Pro 40. This AI has provided very quiet recordings even with the gain cranked and is a breeze to use. Thing is also built like a tank. The Mix Control software was a little intimidating at first, but a quick read through the owner's manual provided enough info to get me going. The program is versatile and extremely useful in creating different mixes. Like I said, I've only had it for a week but am pumped about the potential. Abelton Live Lite has been awesome as well compared to the free DAW I was using previously. I would definitely recommend to anyone else looking to get into recording. (Posted on 3/9/12)

Got a smoking deal on this interface through Pro Audio Star. The mic pre\'s are quite nice on this 20 I/O interface and it certainly equals other interfaces costing 2-3 times as much.

Outstandng interface (and not only for the money)

I will begin with expressing my very warm thanks to the ProAudio Star representatives who literally bent over backwards to help me get this interface as soon as possible. I live in Canada and ordered the Sapphire Pro 40 early in 2011 from ProAudio Star because they offered a discount, which was impossible to ignore. Now on to the (brief) review. I want to say that although it takes time to figure out how the routing software works (but it does work great alright), the hardware is simply outstanding and the preamps, incredible. This is British design at its really, really high level, and for a realistic price at that. Everything feels good about this product from the uncoloured sound itself to the very solidly built case. This interface is definitely studio quality and works for a variety of - sometimes totally different - applications ranging from recording acoustic classical music to mixing experimental electronica. Solid, stable, no-hassle interface

There are interfaces with more bells and whistles (that you mostly don\'t need) and interfaces with better pre\'s (for much more money) but I couldn\'t be happier. Absolutely no driver glitches, very quiet neutral sounding pres, sturdy construction - I am done longing for a better front end. If you can\'t make this sound good you aren\'t trying.
