Product Description for the Novation LaunchPad

The Novation Launchpad Control Surface communicates bi-directionally with Ableton Live software to give you real-time session feedback. Now you really can Play Live. Launchpad ships with a dedicated 'Launchpad edition' of Ableton Live 8, but can control almost any other music software using Novation's award-winning Automap control software. Launchpad was jointly designed by Novation and Ableton to bring the features of Live to modern musician's fingertips. The 8x8 grid of backlit buttons addresses a multitude of functions with the help of mode selectors that transport you around the Live interface.

Flip from launching clips to tweaking mixer settings in a stroke. Launch your song into a heavy buildup, then switch to a synth or a drum machine for an impromptu solo at the touch of a button. It's all possible on Novation Launchpad, and all without touching the mouse or keyboard!

Novation Launchpad is bus-powered from a single USB connection, and has a 10" square desktop footprint. Rubber feet ensure Launchpad stays secure on the surface on which it's placed, and an optional padded neoprene travel sleeve is available. It ships with a USB cable, plus a DVD ROM with Mac and PC installers for a special 'Launchpad Version' of Ableton Live 8, as well as 1GB of sample content from Loopmasters and Mike The Drummer. It also comes Automap enabled.

Automap Control

A Novation Launchpad can also control other DAWs and plug-ins using Novation's Automap control software. Automap can assign controls to software parameters on VST/AU/RTAS/TDM plug-ins by simply clicking on them, and touching a controller!

  • Automap-enabled – For instant, intelligent control over VST/AU/RTAS/TDM plug-ins and all MIDI compatible standalone software applications.
  • See what you're triggering – Automap provides a customizable heads-up transparent display across your computer screen. Ideal for seeing at a glance samples that you're about to trigger.
  • Unleash the power of QWERTY keyboard shortcuts – Automap PRO, an optional upgrade available to purchase online, lets you assign almost any computer keyboard shortcut, and combinations thereof, to Launchpads buttons.
  • Old-school MIDI control – Utilising Automap, Launchpad can operate as a standard MIDI controller, creating custom MIDI maps with 72 of its buttons transmitting either CC or MIDI note data.
  • Flexible trigger platform for Max MSP and Reaktor programmers – Programmers can utilize variable brightness and multicolor LED states to their full advantage when designing new and innovative tools in Max MSP and Reaktor.

Launchpad and Max for Live

Max is a visual programming environment which allows you to custom build instruments and effects. Ableton announced 'Max for Live' when they launched Live 8. This means that Max and Ableton are now integrated, so you can build your own instruments (or tweak other people's) within Live.

Launchpad can be used to control these instruments. For example, parameters on Max for Live's step sequencer can be triggered using Launchpad's buttons. Launchpad gives you a huge amount of visual feedback. Multiple colors and brightnesses across different buttons display visual information about whether the note is on, the velocity, note length, pitch, and whatever else you want to see!

Novation have created a Max for Live step sequencer patch utilizing Launchpad's multicolor and brightness variations, available to download from: www.novationmusic.com

Launchpad supports multiple unit operation. Connect up to 3 Launchpads at a time. Expand your grid with multiple Launchpads, or have one Launchpad dedicated to mixer mode, and the other to launching clips.

Home Lab Life Ep. 3: Mister A*OK

by ghostdad on Dec 28, 2010

For this edition of Home Lab Life we checked in with Mr. A*OK. I first met Marko in Boston and have been lucky enough to cross paths with him DJing on the radio and in the club there and here in New York. Since moving to NY Marko has set up a nice sound treated studio on the top floor of his Bedstuy apartment.  He gave us some pointers for sound insulation and bass frequencies from his experience as an acoustic consultant.  Watch the video for an in depth look at his use of Owens Corning insulation...

Advanced Launchpad Techniques in Ableton Live

by ghostdad on Dec 8, 2010

I've been playing around with a Novation Launchpad lately and found a wealth of knowledge, patches, and links in the Launchpad tip and trick thread in the Ableton user forums. I wanted to post these two videos in particular to show some advanced techniques for customizing your Launchpad in Ableton Live. What I like about these examples is they make use of MIDI routing completely within Ableton without need to dive into Max4Live or third party Monome emulators (see our previous article on how the Launchpad can emulate a Monome). This first video is a simple example...

Arpshift Creator Talks Monome

by ghostdad on Sep 2, 2010

ArpShift 2 from Edward Loveall on Vimeo. To follow up our last grid controller post on Monomes, Launchpads, and the programable music interface community around them I talked to another Monome developer and community insider Edward Loveall.  Edward is a composer and sound designer who's chord based sequencer application is popular among Monome users.  Here's his take on the grid: What attracted you to the Monome community? What's your current Monome setup? I'm actually borrowing a Monome from a friend. It's a 64 (8x8). However, I have all the parts I need for an 80h (16x8) and am starting to build...

Flying Lotus Controller Rig

by ghostdad on Aug 20, 2010

While checking out the line up for this year's Decibel Festival I found this cool picture of Flying Lotus in what looks like his home studio.  I remember seeing a photo on his myspace with some synths and other noisemakers as well, but when working with his software of choice Ableton Live it looks like he's got an Akai MPD24, a Novation ReMOTE 25 SL MKII, and a Monome (see prior post on how these are similar to the Novation Launchpad). Not sure how up to date this is but some great gear and a great photo by...

Can a Launchpad be a Monome?

by ghostdad on Aug 10, 2010

The Monome has been long revered as the holy grail of DIY controllers. It's open format and active community of builders and developers make it great for people who want to completely customize their music making experience. But building your own can be a steep climb for those not familiar with electronics or programing. Novation recently introduced their own Monome-like controller that begs the question, can it work the same way? A Monome works with Open Sound Control (OSC), which allows it to send and receive control information in a variety of ways, and many Monome users...

Super lightweight... compact... Great piece of gear

I originally owned the APC40 and thought it was awesome, but it gave me more options on the fly then I needed for my live show. Therefore I switched to the Launchpad and never looked back. It is small, lightweight, and best of all, NO POWER SUPPLY NEEDED. It\'s all USB. SO really easy. and for the price at Pro Audio Star, it can\'t be beat. You can check out my band at www.smileradiomusic.com to get an idea of how an indie rock band could incorporate such an \"electronic\" instrument/controller. it\'s really great. (Posted on 9/27/10)
