Mackie TH-15A Thump
Product Description for the Mackie TH-15A Thump
Designed by the same team that produced the best-selling Mackie SRM450v@2 the Mackie Thump TH-15A delivers deep low-end and real power in a lightweight design that is extremely portable. Class-D Fast Recovery™ amplification pushes 400-watts of power to the high-frequency compression driver and bass-pounding 15″ woofer. Plus, Mackie Active processing, including a precision crossover and driver time-alignment provides total optimization for maximum system efficiency. Versatile by design, the TH-15A features a user-adjustable 3-band EQ for tone control and, since it can be pole-mounted or used as a wedge, the TH-15A represents the best value available for a complete stage solution.
More than Just a Powered Speaker Cabinet
Sure, the TH-15A has a built-in power amp—it has two of them, 300-Watts for the 15" woofer and 100-Watts for the high-frequency compression driver. Our Class-D Fast Recovery low-frequency amp drives the woofer more efficiently with less heat byproduct than other speakers. But so much more goes into a Mackie loudspeaker design than just amplifiers. Mackie Active Technology based on the popular SRMv2 Series) divides the frequencies via a precision 2-way crossover and also time aligns the signals so low-frequency and high-frequency signals arrive in sync to every member of your audience. Active compression provides a first line of defense for the drivers and thermal circuitry protects the amplifiers and power supply should things get too hot. All the onboard electronic systems work together dynamically to produce superior quality sound previously unavailable in this price range.
Portability Meets Versatility
Not only is the TH-15A a superb PA enclosure, it also makes a superior monitor wedge—just lay the cabinet on its side and turn it up. The compact, lightweight design means zero strain, whether mounting it on a high pole or loading up the van. The TH-15A's wide frequency response makes it ideal as a keyboard, vocal or even bass guitar monitor. The Thump has incredibly smooth response and dispersion over a wide range of frequencies, so you can crank it without the fear of ear-splitting feedback.
Exceptional Sonic Performance EQ
TH-15A powered loudspeakers put out a tremendous amount of sound for their size and price tag. The two-way ported design generates ample quantities of chest-pounding bass, and its 1" compression driver ensures smooth, wide dispersion. We even inserted a 3-band equalizer at the input to give you all the tonal control you could ever want, with an available 15dB boost or cut at 80Hz (low shelf), 100Hz to 8kHz (sweepable mids) and 12kHz (high shelf). With the TH-15A's extremely versatile EQ, you can add some extra thump to that kick drum, bring out the sizzle in your hi-hats, add pop to vocals or correct acoustic anomalies in the room.
Protecting Your Investment
Because we know you demand the most from your speakers, we added some extra circuitry to keep your TH-15As performing at their best, even when pushed really hard for long periods of time. Each driver has its own transparent compression circuit, which helps protect them from damaging transient peaks. An over-excursion filter, inserted just before the low frequency amplifier, protects the woofer from bottoming-out when the low-end is driven to the maximum. This means you can hit them hard without fear of thermal damage. We know things can get pretty hot in the real world, so if the electronics do overheat, separate thermal switches activate and shut down the high and/or low frequency amplifiers until they cool down. These extra protections ensure long life and great-sounding loudspeakers you can always count on.

they work for me...

Design-wise, even the naturally creased speaker grill screen is ergonomically designed so your leg/knee doesn\'t have to bang against the cabinet if you carry it on it\'s side. I\'ve never have seen anyone else design a speaker cabinet with such thoughtfulness in mind. Also makes for a great floor monitor regardless of what side that you lay it on. You can even tilt it back at an angle from its\' upright position! EQ with sweepable mids are nice when needed. I sometimes fill in with bands and usually place a single TH-15a an a speaker tripod. Talk about saving valuable floor space when on stage!
I am a PA gear head that has several PA configurations & the TH-15A\'s NOW fill the bill for me 95% of the time. GREAT BANG FOR THE BUCK. They work for me. If you have a single/duo/combo group that plays for small or medium sizes venues (10-200 people or whatever small or medium means to you)... they sound just fine. Fyi – any powered speakers that cost twice as much as the Thumps will sound (and obviously perform) a little better so it\'s hard to accurately compare them since there is nothing else available (yet) in it\'s price range. The warm sound of any digital piano (vocals, MIDI tracks, MP3s or anything else) I play through really makes both me and my clients very happy!!!
Some solo gigs I only basically have to cart a TH-15A, speaker tripod stand and a keyboard (Roland Juno “Stage” that has vocal a Lo-Z Mic Input), For larger gigs I run stereo, but can utilize my other TH-15A as a backup if something happens.
BTW: Be sure to purchase a speaker cover to protect your investment, you\'ll be glad that you did. In general, any plastic speaker enclosure will scratch if handled half-heartedly. The (recessed) EQ knobs are (still) a little to long for my tastes and need to be protected accordingly.
Tips - PLEASE NOTE
Much like you can\'t drive a new Volkswagen Beetle in a official NASCAR race, don\'t expect these cabinets to work miracles for \"super hi-volume\" applications that they were never designed for. I notice that users who post bad reviews of the TH-12\'s & TH-15\'s tend to fall into the following groups that have unrealistic expectations of both themselves and their equipment:
* High volume players that think these speakers can push (their ego &) a large band sonically through them all night at full volume.
* (A few) owners that fail to utilize the need for additional sub cabinets for larger (and/or outdoor) venues.
* YES... In a pinch (or in my solo gig configuration), you don\'t need a preamp/mixer to drive these cabs at low to moderate levels. But remember... not enough initial signal for ANY powered speaker = less headroom AND your speakers will naturally clip earlier than they should.
My Thumps saved my back and my wallet. I\'m vey pleased with my purchase. (Posted on 6/22/11)

this system is an absolute eargasm. If you need a cheap EFFECTIVE speaker in short notice time that is lightweight, durable, compact, but will PUNCH through a wall. This system is for you.
-User-adjustable 3-band contour EQ with sweepable mid-frequency (Especially for you bass heads)
-Doesn\'t need to be blasted to power a small-large indoor party or even a small-medium outdoor party. (Medium-Large outdoor parties you NEED 2 speakers, and if your doing deep bass songs, get a QSC Subwoofer too)
-OL with deep heavy bass while being turned up.
Hopes that helps you guys :)
Happy Mixing & Blasting
