Product Description for the Ableton Live 8 Full Version

Ableton Live is about making music; for composition, songwriting, recording, production, remixing and live performance. Live's nonlinear, intuitive flow, alongside powerful real-time editing and flexible performance options, make it a unique studio tool and a favorite with live performers. If you'd rather be "making music" than just "using music software," Ableton Live is for you. Live 8, the latest version, includes a wealth of new techniques and improvements with a new groove engine, revamped warping, live looping, new effects, crossfades in the Arrangement View and a reworked MIDI editor.

Session View

Live is the only music production software with the "Session View": a unique grid for recording and playing musical ideas and phrases. The Session View is non-linear, so you can record and play back your ideas in any order you want. When you're working on a new track, this is a smart, flexible way to write and record. If you're performing music live, it gives you complete flexibility and freedom to improvise.

Arrangement View

Live also has a second view: the "Arrangement View," a complete music production environment. This is the linear counterpart to the Session View and is well-suited to "traditional" recording, arranging and mixing. These two views interact with one another, each with its own strengths and intricacies. Both views are based on the single principle of creative, intuitive music-making.

Uninterrupted creative flow

In Live, you never have to stop the music. Record audio and MIDI on the fly, drop in loops and samples, add effects and swap sounds without ever hitting the stop button: everything happens in real time. You're free to improvise and the computer actually becomes a musical instrument—an expressive and creative tool, perfectly at home on stage or in the studio.

Beats made easy

Live's unique Drum Rack combines drag-and-drop simplicity in a familiar pad-style interface. Each of the 128 drum pads can have its own instrument or sample plus effects. Slice beats, loops or REX files to MIDI for additional control options and use the new groove feature (which includes grooves from the legendary MPC and SP1200 machines) to add swing to your beats.

Creative expression for DJs

Mix and match tracks and loops automatically, remix on the fly, capture audio loops in real time from decks and other external sources, incorporate your own productions into the mix, and much more. Whether it's the centerpiece of the DJ rig or just a creative sidearm, Live gives DJs entirely new worlds of creative expression.

Looping with Live

Not only for guitarists, the Ableton Looper gives you classic sound-on-sound looping without the limitations of a hardware device. Looper is set up for remote operation, so you can record, overdub, undo and more without touching the computer.

Totally compatible

Live works seamlessly with controller hardware and assigning custom MIDI controls is simple. Live supports AIFF, WAV, MP3, Ogg Vorbis and FLAC files, VST and AU effects and instruments. Live can handle REX files and runs as a ReWire Master or Slave, so it works nicely alongside other DAWs like Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase or Reason. And if you have a multicore or multiprocessor system, Live supports that, too.

Home Lab Life Ep. 6: Taylor Kuffner - Gamelatron and more....

by WordPress on Sep 7, 2011

This Home Lab Life episode, featuring audio magician Taylor Kuffner, was shot back in the early Spring of 2011. Taylor is a frequent customer of ProAudioStar usually coming into to buy large speakers for his local rental company. We soon learned that besides hooking up large sound systems for underground parties throughout Brooklyn he is probably best known as the creator of the Gamelatron, a large robotized Gamelan that operates as a large, complex, MIDI instrument. He uses the same technology used in Pat Metheny's Orchestrion, that was developed by Eric Singer and the League of Electronic Musical Urban...

Home Lab Life Ep. 3: Mister A*OK

by ghostdad on Dec 28, 2010

For this edition of Home Lab Life we checked in with Mr. A*OK. I first met Marko in Boston and have been lucky enough to cross paths with him DJing on the radio and in the club there and here in New York. Since moving to NY Marko has set up a nice sound treated studio on the top floor of his Bedstuy apartment.  He gave us some pointers for sound insulation and bass frequencies from his experience as an acoustic consultant.  Watch the video for an in depth look at his use of Owens Corning insulation...

Advanced Launchpad Techniques in Ableton Live

by ghostdad on Dec 8, 2010

I've been playing around with a Novation Launchpad lately and found a wealth of knowledge, patches, and links in the Launchpad tip and trick thread in the Ableton user forums. I wanted to post these two videos in particular to show some advanced techniques for customizing your Launchpad in Ableton Live. What I like about these examples is they make use of MIDI routing completely within Ableton without need to dive into Max4Live or third party Monome emulators (see our previous article on how the Launchpad can emulate a Monome). This first video is a simple example...

Can a Launchpad be a Monome?

by ghostdad on Aug 10, 2010

The Monome has been long revered as the holy grail of DIY controllers. It's open format and active community of builders and developers make it great for people who want to completely customize their music making experience. But building your own can be a steep climb for those not familiar with electronics or programing. Novation recently introduced their own Monome-like controller that begs the question, can it work the same way? A Monome works with Open Sound Control (OSC), which allows it to send and receive control information in a variety of ways, and many Monome users...

I\'m just going to get to the heart of my review. Ableton Live is a go to DAW if you write music, perform live, or even do sound for theater. Radio, Television, recording studio - it does it all. Ableton is a creative tool overall. You can easily switch between DJ style Session view and the DAW based Arrangement view to record music like other DAWs but its real strength lies in being able to use the included Ableton Machines as new creative tools. I have been using Live since version 5 and made full band recordings, electronic music, and theater sound designs...all in the box with $200 audio interface. Ableton Live is perfect for creative sound designers and songwriters alike! GET IT NOW! (Posted on 3/28/11)
